How Real Estate Investing Funded My Surrogacy Journey

I am very passionate of using real estate investing to help fulfill your life goals. I was able to leverage real estate to help accomplish my goal of building a family, via surrogacy. It is no secret that surrogacy is not only taboo, but a very expensive process! So in this week’s MoneyChisme Podcast episode, I share a little bit of my journey and how real estate investing helped me fund it.

Choosing Surrogacy

Additionally, in this MoneyChisme Podcast episode, I talk about how I knew, since 23 years old, that I had fertility issues and would have to pursue In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF). However in 2021, when my husband and I wanted to try, it turned out I would be unable to carry. Therefore, my last resort was to pursue surrogacy. However, we used gestational surrogacy, in which the baby is biologically mine and my husband’s, and the surrogate just carries it.

Understanding the Costs of Surrogacy

The costs of surrogacy can vary widely depending on factors such as location, agency fees, legal expenses, medical procedures, and compensation for the surrogate. On average, the total expenses for a surrogacy journey can range from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Therefore, it is important to have a clear understanding of these costs.

For example, I have estimated that it has cost me almost $150,000. That is does not include the extra $25,000 for IVF. The overall cost, included the surrogate’s compensation, an expense package (for clothes, medication, gas etc), agency costs, legal fees, and other miscellaneous. Below is a small breakdown of some of the typical costs.

How was I able to afford this very expensive journey? Well, with real estate investing! Real estate has long been recognized as a sound investment strategy, offering both short-term gains and long-term wealth accumulation. Having the ability to leverage real estate investments, to generate passive income streams that I was used for surrogacy journey.

Due to my my ability to leverage real estate, I was able to raise the funds for my surrogacy journey. First, the main chunk of the cash needed was acquired through taking out a second mortgage on my home. I had some equity that I pulled out to help afford it. Although, it is not an ideal situation, it was not in my plans to keep this home. It was always part of my plan to sell this home when I moved back home to Texas.

Additionally, I used the cashflow from my rental properties to save up for my surrogacy journey. This also allowed me to have the extra funds when additional costs came up. And they did come up! Therefore, due to my real estate investments, I was able to accomplish this huge goal.

Finally, funding a surrogacy journey through leverage real estate investing requires careful planning, diligent execution, and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances. By harnessing the power of real estate investments, you can create a sustainable financial foundation to support your family goals. Remember, the journey may be challenging at times (it was for me!), but with determination, perseverance, and the right investment strategy, you can turn your dreams into reality.
