Would You Buy a Haunted House? Spooky Deals as Investment Properties

Buying Haunted House as Investment Properties? I Went There.

In the spirit of Spooktober, I did something a little…loca. I spent this episode of Real Estate Jefas exploring haunted houses and spooky houses for sale, and asked the big question: Would you buy one?

Listen, this isn’t just about ghosts and creaky staircases. It’s about what happens when real estate, cultural beliefs, and smart investing all collide. Because I don’t know about you, but growing up, I definitely heard stories about casas embrujadas. And now, as a rental property investor, I’ve found myself wondering: Do haunted houses make terrible investments… or genius ones?

Key Takeaways from the Episode

1. Death Disclosures Vary by State

My co-host Lindsay shared how in California, sellers have to disclose if someone died in a home within the past three years. But not every state requires that. Some only disclose if asked; others, not at all. So if you’re investing, especially out of state, Google that address because you never know what might pop up. Zillow suggests to even ask the neighbors for any info.

2. Not All Spooky Vibes Are Bad

One of the homes we explored had a bullet lodged in the roof for about 40 years, according to the inspector. Did that stop Lindsay from buying it? Nope. And honestly, a lot of older homes have history. As first-gen Latinas, many of us invest in neighborhoods with older housing stock. And yes, that sometimes comes with ghosts… or mold.

3. Cultural Energy Is Real

In nuestra cultura, we don’t just walk into a house and call it home. We sage it. We bless it. We do limpias. Lindsay and I talked about how energy does linger in spaces. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, tuning into how a space feels matters. That gut feeling? That’s wisdom too.

The Spooky Listings We Explored

We found a few homes from spookyhomesforsale.com that gave off serious novela meets horror film vibes:

  • A 7,000 sqft mansion in Kansas for just $95K! Romanesque towers, fireplaces galore, and a whole lotta work. You could turn it into a witchy Airbnb, tea house, or event space… if you’re brave enough.
  • A gorgeous brick home in Salem (yes, that Salem) with witchy energy and fireplaces in nearly every room. It sold for just $118K. If I had the money, this would’ve been the one. Imagine the sisterhood retreats!
  • And the big one: the actual Conjuring house in Rhode Island. Yep. It sold earlier this year, and while it’s iconic, I wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot ouija board. Too risky for me, amiga.

Would You Invest in a Haunted House?

This episode was fun, but it also reminded me that real estate investing isn’t always black and white. It’s spiritual. It’s emotional. It’s ancestral.

We carry our beliefs with us and that includes what we think about death, energy, and what it means to “own” space. So while Zillow might not list “ghosts” under property features, your intuition might.
